In this tutorial, I'll show you how to transform a recycled glass bottle into a pretty spring vase using vellum stickers and decoupage.

Stickers have always been cool. They come in many styles, making them an easy choice for crafts. Vellum stickers, also known as washi stickers, work perfectly for this project.

What Are Vellum or Washi Stickers?
If you haven't come across vellum stickers before, they are made from a thin, flexible, and somewhat transparent material. The image is printed directly on their surface. They usually come in large packs with various designs. You can choose from different themes too. I've seen them available on Etsy, eBay, and Amazon.

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Your Vase
Step 1 - Paint the Bottle White

Before you start painting, ensure your bottle is clean and dry. If you're using a recycled bottle, you may need some Goo Gone to remove any sticky residue from the label.
Once clean, use enamel white craft paint to coat the bottle. Apply paint evenly, working in sections if necessary. Allow it to dry completely.

Enamel craft paint provides good coverage with fewer streaks, which is ideal for glass surfaces.
Step 2 - Add Vellum Stickers

Peel the backing off the sticker and carefully apply it to your bottle. Due to the thin nature of the vellum, it can fold easily, so patience is key. Smooth out any wrinkles that may occur.
Before placing stickers, consider planning their arrangement. How many sticks do you want to use? This helps ensure an appealing design.
Step 3 - Seal It with Mod Podge

Use Mod Podge to seal the stickers and smooth out any bumps. I recommend using matte Mod Podge for a non-glossy finish.
Step 4 - Attach Ribbon Around the Top of the Bottle

If you’re using a recycled bottle, it may have ridges from a twist-off cap. Gluing ribbon over these ridges enhances the bottle's appearance.
The ribbon adds a lovely touch, even if the bottle has no ridges.

I chose to use crocheted ribbon I had on hand. You can experiment with whatever you have available.

Project FAQs
Q: Can I wash my decoupage glass bottle?
A: It depends on the sealer used. If sealed with regular Mod Podge, avoid soaking it. Wipe it gently with a damp cloth. For a more washable version, use a dishwasher-safe Mod Podge or an acrylic sealer.
Q: Why is my paint peeling off the glass bottle?
A: Glass is a non-porous surface, affecting paint adhesion. To prevent peeling:
✔ Lightly sand the bottle before painting.
✔ Use a primer specifically for glass.
✔ Let the paint dry completely before applying Mod Podge or stickers.
Q: Can I use any stickers for decoupage?
A: Most stickers work, but vellum stickers blend best with the painted surface for a seamless look. When using regular stickers, apply an extra layer of Mod Podge to seal the edges and prevent peeling.
Q: What if I don’t have Mod Podge?
A: You can make DIY decoupage glue by mixing equal parts of white glue and water. However, Mod Podge offers a smoother, more durable finish.
Pro Tips or Alternative Ideas
Try Different Base Colors: While white paint provides a clean look, consider other light colors like pastel blue or soft beige for a vintage vibe.
Use Other Transparent Designs: Get creative by experimenting with napkins, tissue paper, or printable decals instead of vellum stickers.
Make It Waterproof: For those wanting a functional vase, seal it with a dishwasher-safe Mod Podge or an acrylic spray for extra protection.
Add Dimension: Consider adding raised embellishments like lace, rhinestones, or gold foil for a more decorative touch post-sealing.
Use It for Gifting: These decoupage bottles make beautiful, eco-friendly gifts. Fill them with fairy lights, dried flowers, or homemade bath salts for a thoughtful present!
